Huanqiu.com Biography & Web Analysis

The Global Times (huanqiu.com) is a daily tabloid newspaper under the sponsorship of the Chinese Communist Party's leader People's Daily newspaper, commenting on worldwide issues from a nationalistic perspective. The newspaper has spread unwarranted conspiracy theories and disinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Established as a Chinese-language weekly publication in 1993, an English-language version was launched on 20 April 2009 as a part of a Chinese government campaign to rival abroad media. 

In 2009, Hu Xijin, the manager in-head of both Chinese and English versions, expressed that he expected that it should make a loss of 20 million yuan in its first year as an English-language publication. As of 2016, Hu said the Global Times was productive but faced challenges that would be familiar to other newspaper editors. 

The English-language version of the newspaper additionally has launched two local readers, Metro Beijing since September 2009 and Metro Shanghai since April 2010, in the two largest Chinese cities, in an effort to give more information to local readers. 

The publication has been marked by some researchers and writers as "China's Fox News" for its propagandistic slant and the adaptation of nationalism. It is It is part of extensive arrangement of Chinese state news sources that establish the Chinese government's propaganda publicity apparatus. It has been assigned as a "foreign mission" by the United States Department of State. The Global Times launched its US version in 2013. In June 2020, the United States Department of State assigned Global Times as a "foreign mission".
